THE CAT FIGHT: Mount Pleasant Panthers at Knoxville Panthers

Friday Night — September 4, 2026

There are Panther tracks all over this one.

Friday night, Head Coach John Bowlin and the Mount Pleasant Panthers travel to Knoxville for a battle with the Knoxville Panthers. Two teams with the same mascot will square off, but when the final horn sounds, only one group of Cats gets to walk away with the victory.

Around the Dog House, we’re calling this one exactly what it is:

And after breaking down what these two teams have put on film and in the stat book, The Dog House sees Grayson Walker slicing and dicing his way to victory and the Mount Pleasant Panthers celebrating on the road Friday night.

Mount Pleasant Brings Balance to Knoxville

One of the biggest things that jumps off the page about Mount Pleasant is balance.

Bowlin doesn’t have an offense that needs to survive by doing one thing. The Panthers showed they can throw it efficiently, run the football with multiple backs and spread the ball among several receivers.

It all starts with senior quarterback Grayson Walker.

Walker was outstanding through the air in Mount Pleasant’s opener, completing 14 of 16 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown without an interception.

That’s an 87.5% completion percentage.

Those aren’t just good numbers. That’s a quarterback operating the offense with control.

Walker didn’t have to force the football downfield or put his team in dangerous situations. He distributed the ball, took what the defense gave him and kept the offense moving.

That’s exactly what Knoxville has to find a way to disrupt Friday night.

Because if Walker gets comfortable?

He can slice and dice a defense.

🔪 Walker Has Plenty of Weapons

The problem for Knoxville is that concentrating solely on Walker isn’t going to solve everything.

Mount Pleasant has weapons around him.

Junior Kaden Schadt emerged as the big-play receiving threat with five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, averaging 20.6 yards per reception. His night included a 50-yard reception.

Then there’s Isaiah Lange, who hauled in five passes for 62 yards, averaging 12.4 yards per catch.

That gives Walker options at different levels of the field.

Take away the deep ball, and Mount Pleasant can work underneath.

Start squeezing those underneath routes, and the Panthers have shown they can create an explosive play over the top.

That’s what makes this offense difficult to defend.

🏃 Helling Leads a Multi-Back Ground Attack

Then Knoxville has to deal with the Mount Pleasant running game.

The Panthers totaled 155 rushing yards on 44 attempts, with several players contributing.

Ryan Helling led the way with 14 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

Griffen Jones added 43 yards on 12 attempts, while Walker contributed another 19 yards on nine carries.

Helling’s two touchdowns are especially important when evaluating this offense. Mount Pleasant doesn’t need Walker to do everything once it gets into scoring position.

Bowlin can put the football in the hands of his backs and let the offensive line go to work.

That creates the kind of complementary football coaches love.

Run it. Throw it. Make the defense defend everything.

🛡️ Don’t Forget About the Mount Pleasant Defense

The offensive numbers will get plenty of attention, but the Dog House believes the Mount Pleasant defense could ultimately determine how comfortable Friday night becomes.

And Isaiah Lange jumps off the stat sheet.

Lange recorded 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

That’s disruption.

Mount Pleasant finished with seven tackles for loss and two sacks as a team, while Keegan Birdsell recorded a team-high seven total tackles.

Adam Denning also came away with an interception.

That’s an important part of this matchup because Knoxville’s offensive production shown in the numbers provided has been limited.

Knoxville recorded 49 rushing yards on 22 carries, an average of just 2.2 yards per attempt.

Emmitt Hyatt carried 13 times for 34 yards, while Brody Higginbotham rushed eight times for 14 yards and a touchdown.

Through the air, Higginbotham completed 1 of 6 passes for five yards.

That gives Mount Pleasant a very clear defensive objective:

Win first down.

If Lange and company can get Knoxville behind the sticks and create obvious passing situations, the matchup begins tilting heavily toward Mount Pleasant.

🐾 DOG HOUSE KEYS TO THE CAT FIGHT

1. Let Walker operate.
Mount Pleasant doesn’t need to reinvent anything. Put the football in Walker’s hands and allow him to distribute it. An 87.5% completion rate with no interceptions shows exactly how efficiently he can operate when he’s in rhythm.

2. Establish Helling and Jones.
If Mount Pleasant consistently produces four or five yards on the ground, Knoxville will have a difficult choice. Bring additional defenders into the box, and Walker gets favorable matchups outside. Stay back, and the Panthers keep pounding away.

3. Unleash Isaiah Lange.
This could be a matchup where Lange creates havoc. His 5.5 tackles for loss demonstrate his ability to penetrate and disrupt an offense before a play develops.

4. Don’t give Knoxville hope.
Road games can become dangerous when turnovers, penalties and special-teams mistakes allow the home team and its crowd to become factors. Mount Pleasant needs to play clean football, start quickly and make Knoxville chase the game.

🎙️ COACH BANKS’ DOG HOUSE BREAKDOWN

There’s something I really like about this Mount Pleasant football team.

They don’t have to win one particular way.

Coach Bowlin has a veteran quarterback. He has multiple running backs. He has receivers who can move the chains and create explosive plays. And defensively, he has athletes capable of getting into an opponent’s backfield.

That’s a difficult combination to prepare for.

The player I’m watching most closely Friday night is Grayson Walker.

Knoxville has to find a way to make him uncomfortable. They can’t allow him to stand back there, see the field and distribute the football wherever he wants.

Because if Walker starts Friday night the way he’s capable of starting it, the Dog House believes we’re going to see exactly what the headline says:

I expect Walker to spread the football around. I expect Helling and Jones to keep Knoxville honest on the ground. I expect Lange and the Mount Pleasant defense to make life difficult on the other side.

Most importantly, I expect John Bowlin’s Panthers to handle their business on the road.

There will be plenty of claws, plenty of hitting and two proud Panther programs fighting for the same thing Friday night.

But when the dust settles and the final horn sounds, The Dog House sees the visiting Panthers celebrating while the home crowd heads for the exits.

## Charles “Chuck” Banks ### Founder and Voice of Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network Charles “Chuck” Banks—known to many throughout the tri-state sports community as Coach Banks or “Chuck the Tank”—is the founder and lead broadcaster of the Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network. Built from more than two decades of coaching, teaching, leadership, and relationship-building, the network is dedicated to telling the stories of the coaches, athletes, schools, and communities that make local sports special. A native of rural Iowa, Banks has spent 20 years in education and more than 25 years coaching football. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Education from Graceland University in 2004 before completing a master’s degree in Secondary Education and Educational Administration and a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. Throughout his coaching career, Banks worked with programs across southeastern Iowa. His stops included Centerville, Central Lee, and Fort Madison, along with seven years coaching girls basketball and additional experience in junior-high track. At Central Lee, Banks served as an assistant defensive coach and activities director before becoming the Hawks’ head football coach from 2020 through 2022. Central Lee reached the playoffs during his final season. He was also part of multiple playoff teams and a district championship during his time with the program. At Centerville, Banks spent nine years as an assistant and helped the Big Reds capture a district championship and earn multiple playoff appearances. He believes the greatest responsibility of a coach is to build relationships, develop leaders, create belonging, and prepare young people for life beyond the playing field. That belief became the foundation for Coaching Culture in Athletics. What began as an effort to create meaningful conversations about coaching and leadership grew into a full sports-media and broadcasting network.
