Next Guy Up, O Line Play, and The Twin Beasts

🐾 SATURDAY MORNING BLITZ: MOUNT PLEASANT KEEPS GROWING — AND KEEPS WINNING

The final score says domination.

But if you talk to Mount Pleasant Head Coach John Bowlin, there is still work to do.

That’s probably what should concern everybody else.

The Panthers moved to 3-0 with a convincing 42-0 victory over Oskaloosa, piling up 451 yards of total offense while the defense pitched a shutout. Yet this wasn’t a perfect football game. There were penalties. There were mental mistakes. Quarterback Grayson Walker threw a couple of interceptions.

Bowlin’s message remains consistent: clean up the mental mistakes every week. We’re still growing.

And this team certainly appears to be growing.

THE RUNNING GAME IS GETTING SERIOUS

Mount Pleasant showed tremendous offensive balance with 223 yards through the air and 228 yards on the ground.

Ryan Helling had another big night, carrying the football 16 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Griffen Jones was right there with him, rushing 12 times for 86 yards, an average of 7.2 yards per carry.

Together, Helling and Jones accounted for 180 rushing yards.

But backs don’t put together nights like that by themselves.

The Mount Pleasant offensive line continues to get better and better, and the right side of that line played fantastic football against Oskaloosa. The Panthers created running lanes, got movement up front and allowed Helling and Jones to attack downhill.

I’m an old football coach. I love seeing backs put up numbers, but when that happens, give those big guys up front some love too.

They’re getting better.

WALKER MAKES PLAYS — SCHADT FINISHES THEM

Walker finished 15-of-21 for 223 yards and three touchdown passes while adding 48 rushing yards and another touchdown.

Yes, he threw two interceptions. Those are part of the mental mistakes Mount Pleasant will work to eliminate.

But Walker also continued making plays.

And when he went looking for the end zone through the air, Kaden Schadt was his guy.

Schadt caught just four passes, but turned them into 81 yards and THREE TOUCHDOWNS.

That’s getting your money’s worth out of four receptions.

For his three-touchdown performance, Kaden Schadt is our DOG HOUSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME.

🐾 DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE GAME: THE TWINS OFF THE EDGE

You can’t talk about a 42-0 victory without talking about that Panther defense.

Mount Pleasant came away with seven recovered turnovers and never allowed Oskaloosa to get on the scoreboard.

And this week, I couldn’t pick just one defensive player.

So I’m going with the guys coming off both edges.

Isaiah Lange and Keegan Heaton.

Call them the Defensive End Twins.

Lange and Heaton helped set the tone up front, playing physical football and creating problems off the edge. When you’ve got guys attacking from both sides and the rest of the defense is flying around creating turnovers, life gets awfully uncomfortable for an opposing offense.

NEXT GUY MENTALITY

One thing I really like about what Bowlin is building at Mount Pleasant is the next-guy mentality.

Football is a long season.

Guys get banged up. Roles change. Somebody who wasn’t expecting a huge role suddenly hears his number called.

When that happens?

Next guy up.

Be prepared. Know your assignment. Do your job.

That’s how programs develop depth, and that’s how good football teams become very good football teams as the season progresses.

Mount Pleasant isn’t there yet.

And I think Bowlin would be the first person to tell you that.

There were too many penalties Friday night. There were turnovers. There were mental mistakes that need corrected.

But think about what we’re saying here.

Mount Pleasant won 42-0, generated 451 yards of offense, ran for 228 yards, forced seven turnovers and pitched a shutout—and we’re talking about how much better they can still become.

That’s a pretty good problem to have.

The Panthers are 3-0.

The offensive line keeps improving.

Helling and Jones are pounding away on the ground.

Walker can hurt you with his arm or his legs.

Schadt just caught three touchdown passes.

Lange and Heaton are coming off the edges.

And the defense is taking the football away.

But the message doesn’t change.

Clean up the mental mistakes.

Keep growing.

Next guy up.

One game at a time.

The Panthers aren’t interested in winning September headlines.

They’re interested in winning the next football game.

And right now, Mount Pleasant just keeps getting better.

## Charles “Chuck” Banks ### Founder and Voice of Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network Charles “Chuck” Banks—known to many throughout the tri-state sports community as Coach Banks or “Chuck the Tank”—is the founder and lead broadcaster of the Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network. Built from more than two decades of coaching, teaching, leadership, and relationship-building, the network is dedicated to telling the stories of the coaches, athletes, schools, and communities that make local sports special. A native of rural Iowa, Banks has spent 20 years in education and more than 25 years coaching football. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Education from Graceland University in 2004 before completing a master’s degree in Secondary Education and Educational Administration and a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. Throughout his coaching career, Banks worked with programs across southeastern Iowa. His stops included Centerville, Central Lee, and Fort Madison, along with seven years coaching girls basketball and additional experience in junior-high track. At Central Lee, Banks served as an assistant defensive coach and activities director before becoming the Hawks’ head football coach from 2020 through 2022. Central Lee reached the playoffs during his final season. He was also part of multiple playoff teams and a district championship during his time with the program. At Centerville, Banks spent nine years as an assistant and helped the Big Reds capture a district championship and earn multiple playoff appearances. Most recently, he coached at Fort Madison under Head Coach Derek Doherty, helping develop younger players within the Bloodhound football program. Banks’ defensive coaching journey evolved from the traditional 5-2 defense to the 3-3-5 before he found his preferred home in the 4-2-5. However, his coaching philosophy has never been limited to schemes, formations, wins, or losses. He believes the greatest responsibility of a coach is to build relationships, develop leaders, create belonging, and prepare young people for life beyond the playing field. That belief became the foundation for Coaching Culture in Athletics. What began as an effort to create meaningful conversations about coaching and leadership grew into a full sports-media and broadcasting network. Coaching Culture in Athletics now serves as the umbrella for Dog Pound Radio, The Coach Show, the Dog House Tour, Dog Pound U, Hound Talk, the Dog House Saturday Morning Blitz, live game broadcasts, team previews, rankings, interviews, historical features, and year-round coverage of local athletics. Through the Dog House Tour, Banks visits practices, meets coaching staffs, interviews athletes, studies programs, and gives local teams the type of detailed coverage normally reserved for much larger schools.
