John Bowlin and the Panthers grab a statement win on the road

There are Friday nights when everything clicks. The running game is rolling, the offense is staying ahead of the chains, and everything on the call sheet seems to work.

Then there are nights when you just have to find a way.

Friday night was one of those nights for John Bowlin and the Mount Pleasant Panthers.

Mount Pleasant traveled to Central DeWitt and walked out with a 16–14 victory, and I think this one tells us quite a bit about where this Panther football program is headed.

I’ve said it before: this group is growing up.

Friday night, they had to.

THE GROUND GAME WASN’T THERE

Central DeWitt wasn’t giving Mount Pleasant much room to run.

The Panthers finished with just 50 rushing yards on 22 attempts. Ryan Helling had 21 yards, Griffen Jones added 17, and quarterback Grayson Walker had 12.

Normally, when you tell me a football team ran for 50 yards on the road, I’m going to tell you they probably had a long bus ride home.

Not this time.

Mount Pleasant adjusted. They competed. And when one part of the offense wasn’t working, they found another way.

That put a lot on the shoulders of senior quarterback Grayson Walker.

Walker responded.

He completed 13 of 21 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 61.9% completion rate and a 145.4 quarterback rating.

Isaiah Lange caught five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Kaden Schadt grabbed three for 39 yards, and Carter Gehling caught two passes for 17 yards and another touchdown.

It wasn’t an offensive explosion.

It was enough.

🐾 DOG HOUSE PLAYER OF THE GAME — GRAYSON WALKER

When Mount Pleasant couldn’t establish its usual ground attack, Walker put the offense on his shoulders and found a way to move the football through the air.

Those aren’t just numbers.

Central DeWitt knew Mount Pleasant was having trouble running the football. Walker still had to stand in there, make the reads, deliver the football and finish drives.

He did exactly that.

His two touchdown passes proved critical in a game decided by two points.

It wasn’t about throwing for 400 yards or putting five touchdowns on the board. It was about making the throws that mattered and helping his team get across the finish line.

We found a way—and Walker helped lead the way.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE

Now let’s talk about where this game really got nasty.

Central DeWitt actually moved the football. Quarterback Jacob Meier completed 15 of 24 passes for 197 yards, while Cooper Small carried the ball 24 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Central DeWitt finished with 313 yards of offense compared with Mount Pleasant’s 204.

But Mount Pleasant kept creating negative plays.

The Panthers finished with 8 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.

And two guys jump off that defensive stat sheet.

Isaiah Lange — 7 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks.

Brandon Veloz — 6 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks and TWO forced fumbles.

That’s getting after somebody.

Mount Pleasant also picked Meier off twice.

Grayson Lowery came away with one interception, while Ryan Helling grabbed another and returned it 48 yards.

Those are game-changing plays.

THIS ONE MEANS SOMETHING

You can pull up the box score and find plenty of reasons Mount Pleasant could have lost this football game.

Only 50 rushing yards.

Outgained 313–204.

Central DeWitt had a 136-yard rusher.

The Panthers weren’t rolling up and down the field.

But here’s the number that matters:

MOUNT PLEASANT 16
CENTRAL DeWITT 14

That’s football.

Sometimes you’re not going to hang 50 on somebody. Sometimes the other team is going to take away what you want to do. Sometimes you’re going to have to scratch, claw and fight for every possession.

Good teams eventually have to learn how to win those games.

THE SATURDAY MORNING THOUGHT

I’ve been around this game long enough to know that seasons aren’t built only on the nights when everything goes right.

Sometimes they’re built on nights like this.

On the road.

Two-point game.

Your running game isn’t going.

The other team is moving the football.

And you’ve got to look across that sideline and ask:

Who’s going to make the next play?

Friday night, Mount Pleasant had answers.

Walker made throws.

Lange made plays on both sides of the football.

Veloz lived in the backfield.

Lowery and Helling took the football away.

And when that clock finally hit zero, John Bowlin and the Mount Pleasant Panthers had found a way.

FINAL: MOUNT PLEASANT 16 — CENTRAL DeWITT 14

That’s a statement win on the road.

## Charles “Chuck” Banks ### Founder and Voice of Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network Charles “Chuck” Banks—known to many throughout the tri-state sports community as Coach Banks or “Chuck the Tank”—is the founder and lead broadcaster of the Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network. Built from more than two decades of coaching, teaching, leadership, and relationship-building, the network is dedicated to telling the stories of the coaches, athletes, schools, and communities that make local sports special. A native of rural Iowa, Banks has spent 20 years in education and more than 25 years coaching football. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Education from Graceland University in 2004 before completing a master’s degree in Secondary Education and Educational Administration and a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. Throughout his coaching career, Banks worked with programs across southeastern Iowa. His stops included Centerville, Central Lee, and Fort Madison, along with seven years coaching girls basketball and additional experience in junior-high track. At Central Lee, Banks served as an assistant defensive coach and activities director before becoming the Hawks’ head football coach from 2020 through 2022. Central Lee reached the playoffs during his final season. He was also part of multiple playoff teams and a district championship during his time with the program. At Centerville, Banks spent nine years as an assistant and helped the Big Reds capture a district championship and earn multiple playoff appearances. Most recently, he coached at Fort Madison under Head Coach Derek Doherty, helping develop younger players within the Bloodhound football program. Banks’ defensive coaching journey evolved from the traditional 5-2 defense to the 3-3-5 before he found his preferred home in the 4-2-5. However, his coaching philosophy has never been limited to schemes, formations, wins, or losses. He believes the greatest responsibility of a coach is to build relationships, develop leaders, create belonging, and prepare young people for life beyond the playing field. That belief became the foundation for Coaching Culture in Athletics. What began as an effort to create meaningful conversations about coaching and leadership grew into a full sports-media and broadcasting network. Coaching Culture in Athletics now serves as the umbrella for Dog Pound Radio, The Coach Show, the Dog House Tour, Dog Pound U, Hound Talk, the Dog House Saturday Morning Blitz, live game broadcasts, team previews, rankings, interviews, historical features, and year-round coverage of local athletics. Through the Dog House Tour, Banks visits practices, meets coaching staffs, interviews athletes, studies programs, and gives local teams the type of detailed coverage normally reserved for much larger schools. The network’s reach extends throughout southeastern Iowa, western Illinois, and northeastern Missouri, connecting communities across the tri-state region. Their growing family includes son-in-law Donald Archambault and grandchildren Orion, Owen, and Ollie. Banks often credits his family for standing beside him through the demanding seasons of coaching, education, broadcasting, illness, and recovery.
