BRETT COOK WAS COOKING: Hawks End Albia’s Seven-Year Run, 20–14

ALBIA, Iowa — Sometimes a football game is bigger than just another number in the win column.

For seven straight meetings, the Albia Blue Demons had gotten the best of Central Lee.

Not this time.

Coach Doug Dodds and the Central Lee Hawks went on the road Friday night and finally got that monkey off their back, grinding out a 20–14 victory over Albia.

And right in the middle of everything was senior Brett Cook.

The name almost makes the headline too easy.

Cook was cooking.

But this wasn’t just offense. Cook impacted the game with his arm, his legs and his defense.

🔥 COOK DID A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING

Cook’s passing numbers won’t jump off the page:

4-of-10 | 43 yards

They didn’t need to.

His legs did the damage.

13 carries | 95 yards | 2 touchdowns

That’s 7.3 yards per carry, and his two rushing touchdowns accounted for 12 of Central Lee’s 20 points.

But we’re still not finished.

On defense?

12 tackles.
1 interception.
1 fumble recovery.

That’s what you call a football player.

Quarterback.

Running threat.

Leading tackler.

Interception.

Fumble recovery.

In a six-point road victory against a program that had beaten Central Lee seven consecutive times, Cook was seemingly everywhere.

🏆 DOG HOUSE PLAYER OF THE GAME — BRETT COOK

This one is pretty easy for the Dog House.

Brett Cook is our Dog House Player of the Game.

Cook accounted for 138 yards of offense, scored two touchdowns, recorded 12 tackles and created two defensive takeaways.

There are nights when statistics tell only part of the story.

Then there are nights when the stat sheet basically screams:

THAT DUDE.

This was one of those nights.

🧱 THIS WASN’T PRETTY — IT WAS TOUGH

Central Lee led 12–6 at halftime, but Albia wasn’t going anywhere.

The Blue Demons tied the game at 12–12 after the third quarter.

That meant 12 minutes.

One quarter.

Somebody had to finish it.

Central Lee did.

The Hawks put eight points on the board in the fourth quarter, Albia answered with two, and Central Lee walked out with the 20–14 road victory.

That’s the type of game that tells you something about a football team.

When momentum shifted, the Hawks didn’t fold.

When Albia tied it, they didn’t panic.

They found a way.

🛡️ THE DEFENSE WON THIS ONE TOO

Here’s one of the most interesting numbers from the game.

Albia quarterback Gage Chance completed 19-of-24 passes for 224 yards.

Albia also rushed for 142 yards.

That’s 366 yards of offense compared with just 136 yards for Central Lee.

And Central Lee still won.

Why?

Takeaways.

The Hawks intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and repeatedly made Albia work for points.

Central Lee’s defense finished with 64 total tackles and 55 solo stops.

Cook led the way with 12 tackles while making both an interception and a fumble recovery.

That’s complementary football.

Sometimes winning isn’t about having the prettiest statistical sheet.

It’s about making the plays that determine the scoreboard.

Central Lee did that.

⚡ SPECIAL TEAMS MATTER

Here’s another number that can’t get buried.

Central Lee recorded 78 punt-return yards on only two returns, including a 70-yard punt return touchdown.

In a game decided by six points, that’s enormous.

Offense gets attention.

Defense gets attention.

But hidden yardage and special-teams touchdowns can completely flip a football game.

This one did.

🐾 THE DOG HOUSE TAKE

Coach Doug Dodds and the Hawks just picked up a win that means something.

Central Lee went into Albia against a team that had owned this series in recent history and said:

Enough.

The Hawks didn’t outgain Albia.

They didn’t light up the passing statistics.

They didn’t need to.

They created turnovers.

They made plays on special teams.

They found the end zone when it mattered.

And when the fourth quarter arrived tied at 12?

Central Lee finished.

That’s football.

And leading the charge was a senior who did about everything you can ask a player to do on Friday night.

## Charles “Chuck” Banks ### Founder and Voice of Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network Charles “Chuck” Banks—known to many throughout the tri-state sports community as Coach Banks or “Chuck the Tank”—is the founder and lead broadcaster of the Coaching Culture in Athletics Radio Broadcast Network. Built from more than two decades of coaching, teaching, leadership, and relationship-building, the network is dedicated to telling the stories of the coaches, athletes, schools, and communities that make local sports special. A native of rural Iowa, Banks has spent 20 years in education and more than 25 years coaching football. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Education from Graceland University in 2004 before completing a master’s degree in Secondary Education and Educational Administration and a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. Throughout his coaching career, Banks worked with programs across southeastern Iowa. His stops included Centerville, Central Lee, and Fort Madison, along with seven years coaching girls basketball and additional experience in junior-high track. At Central Lee, Banks served as an assistant defensive coach and activities director before becoming the Hawks’ head football coach from 2020 through 2022. Central Lee reached the playoffs during his final season. He was also part of multiple playoff teams and a district championship during his time with the program. At Centerville, Banks spent nine years as an assistant and helped the Big Reds capture a district championship and earn multiple playoff appearances. Most recently, he coached at Fort Madison under Head Coach Derek Doherty, helping develop younger players within the Bloodhound football program. Banks’ defensive coaching journey evolved from the traditional 5-2 defense to the 3-3-5 before he found his preferred home in the 4-2-5. However, his coaching philosophy has never been limited to schemes, formations, wins, or losses. He believes the greatest responsibility of a coach is to build relationships, develop leaders, create belonging, and prepare young people for life beyond the playing field. That belief became the foundation for Coaching Culture in Athletics. What began as an effort to create meaningful conversations about coaching and leadership grew into a full sports-media and broadcasting network. Coaching Culture in Athletics now serves as the umbrella for Dog Pound Radio, The Coach Show, the Dog House Tour, Dog Pound U, Hound Talk, the Dog House Saturday Morning Blitz, live game broadcasts, team previews, rankings, interviews, historical features, and year-round coverage of local athletics. Through the Dog House Tour, Banks visits practices, meets coaching staffs, interviews athletes, studies programs, and gives local teams the type of detailed coverage normally reserved for much larger schools. The network’s reach extends throughout southeastern Iowa, western Illinois, and northeastern Missouri, connecting communities across the tri-state region. Banks has covered and developed relationships with programs including Fort Madison, Central Lee, Centerville, West Burlington–Notre Dame, Mount Pleasant, Macomb, West Hancock, and Brown County. His work highlights more than star players and final scores. Their growing family includes son-in-law Donald Archambault and grandchildren Orion, Owen, and Ollie. Banks often credits his family for standing beside him through the demanding seasons of coaching, education, broadcasting, illness, and recovery.
